The beginning of the Bar-None Club in Egypt

All the following pictures were taken in Egypt between 1944 and 1948 recording the early memories of the club.

Lance/Sergeant Walter Douglas Stopforth

Served in the dessert 1943-?
Born in Liverpool and seeing war was inevitable joined the TA (Sigs) at Signals House, Queens Drive Liverpool. Served in Egypt as a Sergeant in the MT section of the Royal Corps. of Signals
He was a member of the trials team that took 1st place at the 17 Area Bar-None MCC trial on Sunday 25th February 1945.

Lieutenant Arthur J Holifield

Arthur Holifield was a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. A member of the Bar-None Club and one of the builders of the Shalufa Speedway circuit. The Shalufa circuit in Egypt was east of Cario near the start of the Suez Canal and in use from mid 1945 to 1946. Photos from his time while serving in Egypt 1945-46 supplied by his family.

Sergeant Arthur J Snow

R.A.F. 746089

Arthur Snow joined the R.A.F. before the war and was stationed in Egypt 1943 till 1947

serving with 109 Maintenance Unit and judging by his photos helping to maintain Hurricane and Bristol Blenheim. 

When competing in Bar None events his rider number was 33 and usually he was found on a Matchless. 

Thanks to his family for his pictures and permission to publish them.
